Rex Gregory is a saxophonist and composer currently residing in New Orleans, Louisiana. He recently graduated from the University of New Orleans with a B.A. in Jazz Performance. He plays all forms of saxophones, clarinets, and flutes with equal facility, which makes him a very sought after musician for a diverse array of projects. Rex has played with the premier jazz luminaries in New Orleans since his introduction into that scene in late 2002. Since then he has been heard with Adonis Rose, Wessel Andersen, Jason Marsalis, Nicholas Payton, David Torkanowsky, and many others. He is a regular touring member of Harold Battiste presents the Next Generation (now Jesse McBride presents the Next Generation) and plays with just about anybody and everybody in the New Orleans scene and beyond. He has had the great privilege of studying with very gifted musicians and persons such as saxophonist Ed Petersen, saxophonist Brice Winston, guitarist Brian Seeger, and clarinetist Evan Christopher. While Rex Gregory is a staple in the New Orleans jazz community, he does not hesitate to venture out into other musical territories. He is always in the laboratory, concocting very diverse vehicles of expression. His forays into free improvisational music in the New Orleans scene, his leading of a drum-less chamber quartet that plays a wide array of repertoire, his tasteful, spirited original compositions, and his calling to any project that is put forth with authenticity is a testament to his wide musical capabilities. Rex is a comfortable addition anywhere and everywhere. Rex is currently taking a part-time teaching position at the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, a position he is very enthusiastic about. “I feel like the students challenge me in a very fundamental way. Since one teaches and leads mainly by example, it follows that the teacher must be actively engaging himself and his circles more than ever.” While teaching is a relatively recent passion, he does not shirk away from it and is found to be very engaging and inspiring by his students. Rex has toured and lived in Europe, performed across much of the continental United States, played in Bolivia as a cultural ambassador, and more. He responds to the call of being an artist with sincerity, responsibility, and great enthusiasm. |
